Hoffman Mechanical Solutions is hiring VRV/VRF Service Technicians for territory-wide roles supporting variable refrigerant HVAC systems, including installation support, start-up and commissioning, warranty service, and owner-direct maintenance with a strong emphasis on customer service.

The primary purpose of the VRV/VRF Service Technician is to provide job site surveys during equipment installation, start-up and commissioning of new systems, warranty service, owner-direct preventative maintenance, and troubleshooting and repair services on variable refrigerant air conditioning equipment across customer facilities.

Variable Refrigerant Systems Start-Up And Service

VRV/VRF Service Technicians support both heat pump and heat recovery variable refrigerant systems, including the associated control networks and ancillary equipment such as dedicated make-up and outdoor air units.

VRV Service Technician Duties

VRV/VRF Service Technicians support the full life cycle of variable refrigerant systems, from installation support and commissioning through long-term maintenance, troubleshooting, and customer-facing service work.

  • Service a variety of HVAC products and equipment with heavy emphasis on variable refrigerant equipment and systems while ensuring customer satisfaction.
  • Read and understand blueprints, equipment manuals, and engineering specifications to properly diagnose and repair units.
  • Use a variety of hand-tools and specialty equipment typical of the commercial HVAC service trade.
  • Perform job site visits to monitor installation of new equipment, provide technical support to installing contractors, and report installation defects to management as needed.
  • Provide start-up and commissioning service upon completion of construction, supporting installing contractors to resolve issues such as piping leaks, communication faults, improper mounting, or improper piping installation.
  • Perform routine system preventative maintenance using manufacturer-specific data logging devices to analyze system performance and identify issues such as faulty sensors before significant equipment damage occurs.
  • Respond to service calls and use manufacturer-specific data logging devices to troubleshoot and diagnose variable refrigerant equipment and systems, finding root causes of failure and performing necessary repairs.
  • Identify, analyze, diagnose, and repair other non-variable refrigerant systems and products at customer locations.
  • Survey customer sites for properly operating equipment and report any deficiencies found, providing sales leads to internal associates as necessary.
  • Perform preventative maintenance, site surveys, replacement, and modifications as needed or requested by customers.
  • Prepare in advance for on-site installation and repairs by examining building layout, anticipating difficulties, gathering materials, and coordinating various trades for on-site work.
  • Diagnose and troubleshoot inoperable equipment and develop action plans for repairs and problem resolution.
  • Determine replacement parts required, secure materials, and complete repairs on a timely basis, returning any non-used or refundable parts for credit.
  • Interact face-to-face with customers to ensure proper and accurate communication.
  • Document all work performed by accurately completing field service reports, equipment log sheets, and related documentation.
  • Complete and submit all required paperwork on a timely basis.
  • Operate and be diligent in properly caring for and maintaining a company vehicle.
  • Provide technical support to customers and administrative personnel, helping plan, schedule, and coordinate field VRV service and construction or replacement work.
  • Remain flexible to work overtime and weekends as necessary to meet customer requirements, with limited travel that may include occasional overnight stays.
  • Stay informed on industry news and trends, products, services, competitors, and emerging technologies, attending company training seminars to stay current on product lines.
  • Conduct oneself in a professional manner as a positive representative of the company to both customers and the public.

Knowledge, Experience, And Critical Skills

VRV Service Technician candidates should combine HVAC education, VRV/VRF or related field experience, computer literacy, and strong analytical and communication skills to support complex variable refrigerant systems.

  • Associate degree or equivalent from a Technical / Trade School with a certificate in Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of related experience preferred or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Operational knowledge of computers and Microsoft Office software preferred.
  • Ability to read, comprehend, and write simple instructions and short correspondence, and to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals, and to compute rate, ratio, and percentages.
  • Ability to understand data presented in graphical formats such as pie charts and bar graphs.
  • Ability to recognize problems and develop the most cost-effective solution, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
  • Must pass pre-hire requirements including background check, motor vehicle report, and drug screening.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license.
  • Must possess EPA mandated card for safe refrigerant handling; universal certification preferred.

Physical Demand Requirements

VRV/VRF Service Technicians work in active mechanical environments that require regular standing, movement, tool use, climbing, lifting, and safe operation in a range of conditions and noise levels.

  • Regularly required to stand, talk, hear, and use hands and fingers to grasp, handle, and feel.
  • Frequently required to walk, reach, stoop, kneel, crouch, climb up and down ladders, and crawl, with occasional sitting.
  • Regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 75 pounds.
  • Requires close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Includes frequent work outdoors and inside mechanical and equipment rooms with exposure to extreme hot and/or cold conditions.
  • Regular exposure to live voltage, moving mechanical parts, heavy equipment, wet and/or humid conditions, elevated or precarious workplaces, fumes or airborne particles, and risk of electrical shock and vibration.
  • Occasional exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, extreme cold, and extreme heat, with a typically loud work environment noise level.
  • Physical activity expectations include frequent standing, walking, stooping, handling/fingering, climbing, bending, pushing/pulling up to 12 lbs, and lifting/carrying up to 50 lbs, with occasional lifting up to 75 lbs, frequent reaching outward and above shoulder, squatting/kneeling, and frequent driving.
